Een andere tegenslag voor de goudmijn, die eigendom is van het Canadese bedrijf Centerra, is dat er veel giftig afvalwater zou weglekken. Het management van de mijn ontkent dat er sprake is van milieuvervuiling, maar uit een kritisch rapport van de regering van Kirgizië zou moeten blijken dat er wel meetbare milieuschade is. De mijnen in Kirgizië zijn belangrijk voor de economie van het land, want samen maken ze 12% uit van het GDP en in 2011 kwam meer dan de helft van alle export van het land uit deze mijnen.
