Met ingang van dinsdag 30 september worden de China yuan en de euro direct inwisselbaar, zo maakte Bloomberg vandaag bekend. Deze stap zorgt voor lagere transactiekosten en maakt het daardoor aantrekkelijker om deze valuta te gebruiken in economische transacties tussen beide handelsblokken, zo schrijft de People’s Bank of China in een persverklaring op haar website. Op 10 oktober vorig jaar tekenden de Europese Centrale Bank (ECB) en de Chinese centrale bank nog een valutaswap om het gebruik van de eigen valuta te stimuleren.
De euro wordt de zesde grote valuta die direct ingewisseld kan worden voor Chinese yuan. Eerder werd er al directe inwisselbaarheid gegarandeerd voor de Amerikaanse dollar, de Australische dollar, de Nieuw-Zeeland dollar, het Britse pond en de Japanse yen. Met een directe inwisselbaarheid van de yuan en de euro wordt het gebruik van dollars overbodig gemaakt. In het verleden was het gebruikelijk dat de valuta eerst werd omgezet naar dollars, maar dat is binnenkort niet meer nodig voor Europese bedrijven die zakendoen met Chinese bedrijven en vice versa.
“Dit is een frisse stap voorwaarts in de internationalisering van de Chinese yuan. Echter, de werkelijke impact op wisselkoersen en bedrijven zal beperkt blijven omdat het handelsvolume van yuan naar andere valuta dan dollars nog niet zo groot is”, zo verklaarde analist Liu Dongliang van de China Merchants Bank in Shenzhen. Hieruit kunnen we concluderen dat ook het gros van de Europese bedrijven nog met dollars betaalt in plaats van euro’s. Frankrijk en Duitsland gaan op dit moment aan de leiding in het gebruik van Chinese yuan, zo concludeerde HSBC in juli na een onderzoek onder 1.304 bedrijven in elf verschillende Europese landen. Van alle ondervraagde Franse bedrijven heeft 26% al eens betaald met yuan, voor Duitse bedrijven lag dat aandeel op 23%. Na China, Hong Kong en Taiwan wordt de yuan nog nergens zoveel gebruikt door bedrijven als in deze twee Europese landen.
De populariteit van de yuan binnen Europa vraagt om betere faciliteiten om met yuan af te rekenen. Het is dan ook geen toeval dat Frankfurt eerder dit jaar een clearing bank kreeg voor Chinese yuan, net als het financiële centrum van Londen. “Gezien de toewijzing van clearing banks in Frankfurt en Parijs was de aankondiging van vandaag [directe inwisselbaarheid euro met yuan] te verwachten”, zo schreven economen van de ANZ Banking Group in een nieuwsupdate.
